Eileen M. Kite ( nee Sweeney) 78, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, passed away on September 1, 2026. Born in Philadelphia on November 1, 1947, Eileen spent her entire life in the city she called home.
Eileen shared 52 years of marriage with her husband, Jack (John). Together they built a family that became the center of her world. She was mother to Christine Kelly and her husband, David; Megan; and Jamie Joyce and her husband, Larry. She is survived by her brother, Den Sweeney. She was preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Margaret Sweeney.
Of all the roles Eileen held throughout her life, being “Gee Gee” was one of her most treasured. She adored her grandchildren, Keeley, Kaitlyn, Max and Sam, who were truly her greatest joy. She loved them deeply and took tremendous pride in each of them.
Eileen worked for the Free Library of Philadelphia as a library assistant for fifteen years at the Bushrod branch. This was a fitting career for someone with a lifelong love of reading, books, and learning new things. Her curiosity never left her, and there was always something new she wanted to discover.
She also had a deep love of music, especially Broadway musicals. In her younger years, Eileen sang and played the guitar, beginning a lifelong appreciation for music that remained an important part of who she was.
Eileen had an especially tender heart for children and animals. Throughout her life, she supported numerous charities benefiting both, quietly helping those who needed kindness and care. Her love for animals could also be seen in the bond she shared with her loyal companion, Maggie. Her beloved cat remained faithfully by Eileen’s side until her very last breath.
Eileen will be remembered for her love of family, her curiosity and love of learning, her compassion for children and animals, her appreciation for music and books, and, above all, the tremendous love she had for those fortunate enough to call her Mom and Gee Gee.
Her family will carry that love with them always.
Visitation will take place on Saturday, September 19, 2026, from 10:00 am to 11:00 am at the Lambie Funeral Home, 8000 Rowland Avenue, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 19136, followed by the memorial service at 11:00 am.
